Ekanem is a distinctive Green Igbo Isiagu Dashiki Shirt for Men featuring an intricate gold-and-burgundy lion-head-inspired African print on rich green cotton, paired with coordinating green silk-cotton blend pants for polished African men’s fashion.

This short-sleeve African Dashiki for men combines traditional Nigerian Igbo fashion, contemporary African clothing design, and versatile African men’s wear in a refined two-piece silhouette.

The cotton African shirt for men features repeated ornate head motifs, a structured chest pocket, gold-tone buttons, short sleeves, and a tailored tunic length, creating an elevated Isiagu Igbo traditional shirt interpretation.

Deep green provides a sophisticated foundation associated broadly with nature, growth, vitality, and renewal, while gold traditionally communicates prestige, richness, celebration, and distinction across many African visual traditions; burgundy adds warmth, depth, dignity, and ceremonial character.

The distinctive Isiagu style is strongly associated with Igbo dress in southeastern Nigeria and is worn for important occasions including weddings and chieftaincy-related ceremonies; modern versions range from short- to long-sleeve shirts and commonly feature patterned fabric and decorative buttons.

Dashiki fashion has West African roots, while the term dashiki derives from the Yoruba danshiki; the garment became especially prominent in the United States during the late 1960s as African American communities embraced African-inspired clothing as an expression of cultural identity and heritage.

Today, African fashion for men continues to reinterpret traditional silhouettes through tailored shirts, pants, prints, embroidery, and contemporary styling, making Ekanem suitable for Nigerian weddings, Igbo cultural celebrations, church events, graduations, family portraits, cultural festivals, parties, dinners, celebrations, and sophisticated everyday African attire.

Ekanem by Dupsie’s African Fashion brings together African clothing for men, Nigerian men attire, Igbo fashion, Isiagu fashion, African Dashiki shirts, short-sleeve Dashikis, African tunics, and modern African men’s fashion in one versatile statement outfit.

Why the Isiagu Design Matters

Isiagu is one of the most recognizable forms of Igbo traditional men’s clothing, particularly in southeastern Nigeria, where it is associated with formal occasions, weddings, cultural ceremonies, and chieftaincy traditions.

The repeated animal-head motif gives African Igbo fashion its instantly recognizable visual identity, while the tailored short-sleeve interpretation makes the traditional Nigerian men’s attire adaptable to contemporary African fashion.

One terminology note for accuracy: Ekanem is best described as an Igbo Isiagu-inspired African fashion design rather than Bini/Edo attire, even though it can be marketed within the broader Alkebulan/African fashion category.

Dashiki History — From West Africa to Modern African Fashion

The Dashiki has West African roots, with the name connected to the Yoruba danshiki, a tunic historically associated with men's clothing in the region.

Historical scholarship also connects danshiki linguistically with the Hausa dan ciki, referring to a short garment worn beneath larger robes, while related tunic forms have a much longer history in West Africa.

During the 1960s, African Dashiki fashion became increasingly visible in the United States, particularly among people seeking visible connections to African heritage and the emerging Black cultural movements of the era.

By the late 1960s and 1970s, African shirts, Dashikis, tunics, prints, and Afrocentric clothing had become important elements of African American fashion and cultural expression.

Modern African men’s fashion has continued that evolution by combining traditional African textiles and motifs with tailored silhouettes suitable for formal wear, cultural celebrations, professional occasions, parties, and everyday fashion.
